Of course it is a bad habit, but aren't you exaggerating a bit? People used to heat their huts with wood or, even worse, dried cow dung. Better to stink than to freeze. Relax, it takes a lot over a long time to ruin your body. Don't be so missionary about it. That kind of puritan attitude always made me chainsmoke when I was in places like California, simply in order not to give in to the sectarian pressure. (I actually quit smoking in Serbia, because it seemed mandatory there and I was starting to develop chronic bronchitis). Take it easy and drink some Sarajevsko Kiseljak to cleanse your system.

I told you people would think i was exaggerating. but i'm telling you augustiner...i'm no missionary. i wish i could take it easy...i live in the balkans - i have to live with smoke - and lots of it. the thing is...my aversion is so strong i just can't...regardless of how much kiseljak i drink ;).

The thing is...i could deal with it somewhat in the 'west' where at least they had top notch ventilation systems. At least then it didn't linger, become stale...and stink like death. But here the ventilation is non existent and my guess is due to the somewhat stressful situation here people have no control whatsoever...it's 2 packs a day or bust.

Oh yeah...i much rather smell like a firepit or even burning cow dung than a crappy drina. believe me brother (i am assuming augustiner) i'm no puritan. just a suffering non smoker.

Here is it what I wake up to every day of my life that I am in Bosnia:

My father in law smoking Drina. I can't really complain, he used to smuggle them to Germany for me so we could afford the habit. From my personal experience I can tell you that inhaling some smoke of the people around you is great compared to smoking a pack a day yourself in the office staring at a computer and some more at the bar after work combined with a zero exercise puno kafu lifestyle.

perhaps my friend....BUT....you smoke by choice, we don't - we get it forced down our throats. Imagine hating olives so much that they make you want to vomit...yet you had to eat them everyday because people around you liked to eat them.

not to mention secondary smoke has been medically declared as lethal as primary smoke.

great photo on virtual tourist. our sad reality.

I was chain smoker until I moved to Australia. Now I am a bigger catholic than the Pope. In my house not even my mother in outlaw is allowed to light up. Some friends of mine who are smokers, do not smoke inside their house, nor any other. There are lyrics by Rambo Adeus "navikoh se ja na sapun i na zubnu pastu" meaning they need a good example, and they will pick it up. You could start the campaign

Enough of the health issues. What's up with the Butmir bullshit conference last week? Papers here in Germany are full of half page articles that go like "no progress made, desintegration possible...". Usually they only mention Bosnia when Dzeko or Misimovic sprain an ankle in Bundesliga. I sometimes have the feeling that somebody wants to keep Bosnia fucked up indefinetely so that companies like Mittal can continue to operate in their half-legal manner and everybody keeps their shady posts in the international organizations on the ground in Bosnia. How's that for a conspiracy theory? Should I start smoking again?

Here's what New York mayor La Guardia said in srb/hr/bih at the opening of the Yugoslavian booth at the world fair in 1939:
"The people of Yugoslavia are generous, kindly and peace-loving. Whenever there is trouble in the Balkans, look for the reason, and it will be found to come from without and not from within. Let the strong and big nations leave the Balkans alone and peace will prevail there". He knew what he was talking about, because he had worked in the US embassy in Rijeka for a while.
